Product Description
For the better part of the past decade, developments in consumer broadband technology have concentrated on improving capacity on downstream?from the network to the user?data channels. Upstream capacity, or the channel from the user to the network, largely was an afterthought. With rare exceptions, such as the development of the DOCSIS 1.1 standard, the entire focus of the broadband industry has been on improving the internet user experience by allowing for faster web page views and downloads. However, three significant behavioral and attitudinal shifts during the past 18 months have caused service providers and vendors to reconsider that focus and put more emphasis on upstream capacity. Those shifts are: Increased penetration of digital cameras, camera-equipped mobile phones and digital video cameras, along with the introduction of high-definition video cameras for consumers, which produce significantly larger digital files and will create greater strain on upstream capacity. Disaggregating of the traditional media value chain in which user-generated content is taking on more importance An increasingly dispersed workforce in which geographic boundaries are erased for knowledge workers In this Yankee Group report, we explore the potential for service providers to adopt a business model that monetizes upstream bandwidth. To arrive at these models, we explore a number of factors including: The applications that require increase upstream bandwidth capacity Current and future capabilities of access technology The cost structure required on the part of service providers to enhance upstream paths
