Since its original release, Microsoft’s implementation of the lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) for the Windows Server line of networking software has become one of the most popular directory service products in the world. If you are involved with the design and support of Microsoft directory services and/or solutions, you really need this book!

You’ll understand the basics of AD and utilize its structures to simplify your life and secure your digital environment. You’ll discover how to exert fine-grained control over groups, assets, security, permissions, and policies on a Windows network and efficiently configure, manage, and update the network. You’ll find new and updated material on security improvements, significant user interface changes, and updates to the AD scripting engine, password policies, accidental object deletion protection, and more. You will learn how to:

  • Navigate the functions and structures of AD
  • Understand business and technical requirements and determine goals
  • Become familiar with physical components like site links, network services, and site topology
  • Manage and monitor new features, AD replication, and schema management
  • Maintain AD databases

5 out of 5 stars Surprising   October 29, 2008
Mathew A. Shember (Cupertino, CA United States)
This was a "why not?" read.

I was surprised to find it a decent introduction to Active Directory. It mainly deals with the background information as it attempts to explain what is Active Directory.

This is not really an AD management book. If you are looking for a "How to" book, this book will not serve your needs. The information is rather basic at best.

There is discussion about the AD schema which might bore a few people but it is useful if you want to get a feel for the guts of AD. I might add; I really haven't had much of a need to dive into the schema as of yet. Had one instance of extending the schema but that was about it.

One thing that is lightly discussed is AD's use of DNS. Many problems tend to be DNS related and it's not discussed much.

There are dated chapters such as upgrading from NT 3.5 or 4.0 and it talks about why you should use AD. These can be skipped.

The chapter on troubleshooting is pretty basic and not really of much use.

The chapter containing links is old. Some no longer work and some have changed due to company renames, etc.

Overall, it's not a book to get a feel for AD. It is becoming dated especially with 2008 being out. But as a cheap introduction it's pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Review of AD for dummies   February 25, 2008
Benjamin Wanagat (Birmingham, AL USA)
So far the book is right on and helpful as far as giving the back gorund of the AD system.
Book showed up ontime and was good price.

4 out of 5 stars Help for a geek taking certs!!!   January 23, 2008
E. LOPES (Tiverton, RI)
For those that need such an aid, a dummy helper, quick book, etc in such a subject as this, it is irreplacable.

4 out of 5 stars Simple explanation   August 30, 2007
Iwan Satria Nugraha
You have no need to worry all the unknown terms, alien language, confusing words that you might have found in the other books. Here, you will get simple explanations about every term used around Active Directory. It's a good one.. I like it =)

5 out of 5 stars A great little book   March 23, 2001

One of my students told me about this book and brought it to class. I hadn't expected so much technical content from a Dummies book. This little book really should be the starting point for anyone interested in Active Directory.
