Product Description
Your ex-spouse is bad-mouthing you to your children, perhaps even trying to turn them against you. If you handle the situation ineffectively, you could lose your children's respect, their affectioneven, in extreme cases, contact with them. Backed by twenty-five years of experience in helping families, Dr. Richard Warshak presents powerful strategies for dealing with everything from tainted parent-child relationships in which children are disrespectful or reluctant to show their affection to disturbances in which children virtually disown an entire side of the family. Divorce Poison offers advice on how to: - Recognize early warning signs of trouble
- React if your children refuse to see you
- Respond to rude and hateful behavior
- Avoid the seven most common errors made by rejected parents
This groundbreaking work gives parents powerful strategies to preserve and rebuild loving relationships with their children and provides legal and mental-health professionals with practical advice to help their clients and ensure the welfare of children.

Life Saver August 26, 2010 Ace9977 Excellent book for anyone who is a victim of parental alienation. The advice in the book is priceless as is keeping a relationship with your child. This book will give you the tools to help you survive through hard and desperate times.
The author is a very intelligent and caring person and it is reflected in his work. It you are someone whose child/children are being brainwashed against you purchasing this book is a must!!!
Must Read August 20, 2010 A dad This book is not just for parents caught up in a divorce war where one parent is emotionally leveraging the children to turn them against the other. If you are in that situation you MUST read this book.
Dr. Warshak presents many situations that allow you to learn how to handle your kids to minimize emotional damage inflicted by an alienating parent. If you are the recipient of alienation, in the interest of you kids, you need to know this. You need to know the damage that you can cause if you don't understand what's going on. You need to be aware of how your kids are thinking, and how to help them through a potentially devastating situation in which the only person who can help them, is you.
This book is also for parents planning or going through a divorce so they understand the damage that they could cause their children if they play this nasty little game.
It should be read by all who are educators, judges, lawyers, family therapists and anyone else involved in the process of determining the best interest of kids in child custody and divorce suits.
Courts have little or no understanding of this problem. I know this first hand. Anyone working in the court system MUST read this book. There are telltale signs in parental behavior and the behavior of the children outlined in this book. These signs can be a barometer of alienation activities by one parent or the other. If court players understand this, the right help can be ordered and the best interest of the children can be properly addressed. If the court players do not understood this situation, no determination by the court can be assumed to be in their best interest. A blind court is throwing darts at a board, and the kids suffer from the court's incompetence due to their lack of knowledge.
This is an incredible book! It teaches us to ignore all we've been taught before it. August 20, 2010 heatherclarke "I hope everyone who finds themselves caught in a divorce in which one of the families, including a grandparent, are willing to brainwash the children involved, will acquire this, read it and apply it. I have purchased this book and am reading it on my iPhone." - a displaced Mother.
Most helpful book on alienation July 16, 2010 Condor 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I was going through my divorce I read over 30 journal articles and four or five books on parental alienation. Divorce Poison was by far the most helpful. This book was not only full of excellent guidance, but it was also an emotional comfort.
an absolute must-read for divorced parents, divorce lawyers, mediators, therapists, etc. July 1, 2010 Micheleebee (Detroit, MI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book achieved my expectations and more! Dr. Warshak was on-point with his theories on the motives behind Parental Alienation Syndrome---jealousy, fear, re-marriage!-- the several ways children can be manipulated in becoming pawns and/or co-conspirators of their abusive parents, and strategies on how to deal with the heartbreak and loss of the relationship as well as how to actively counteract the alienation as it occurs. He even offers suggestions on how to choose an effective therapist or custody lawyer. What an amazing and profound read. Phenomenal!
The book has many examples of the varying degrees (but no less harmful) of Parental Alienation, many of which I could relate to personally. It wasn't full of clinical treatise and legal jargon--it had poignant stories from actual children and families dessimated from the hate campaigns. It is a raw read, very compelling.
It is notable to remark that Dr. Warshak stresses that many of the behaviors of the hatred-obsessed parent are not as clear and outrightly malicious as name-calling or bashing, that some behaviors are subversive and insidious and can be difficult to recognize, even by therapists and custody officials. He goes into specifics on how exaggerations, lies, suggestions, innuendos, subtle gestures, using rigteousness can be vehicles in laying down the groundwork for PAS.
As a targeted mother/stepmother in a blended family, and as a child victim of parental alienation herself, I've witnessed hate campaigns at all angles. It is interesting to note that PAS can be launched toward extended relatives, such as grandparents, step parents, even pets, anyone who is connected with the targeted parent and is seen as his "ally." With education on the subject and the aid of a therapist, I am more confident there are ways to combat PAS, and reverse its lasting effects.
Dr. Warshak is to be commended for his commitment at safeguarding the welfare of children, who are most always unwilling participants to the effects of divorce.
