5 out of 5 stars Suzie Housley, Midwest Book Review   August 8, 2010
Suzie Housley (Oak Ridge, Tn United States)
Books have a way of coming into your life when we need them the most. This past January I suffered a breakup that left an empty place in my heart. It was difficult ending something that I felt should have lasted longer than it did. Still hurting I wanted to jump back into another relationship, before I realized that I was not completely healed from the last one.

It was during the time of my breakup that I was asked to review Susan J. Elliott's Getting Past Your Breakup: How to Turn a Devastating Loss Into the Best Thing That Ever. This one book was my lifeline in rebuilding my shattered heart. It showed me how to deal with the emotions I was experiencing, and how to move forward and discover how to not make the same mistakes twice.

What sets this book apart from other self help titles is the fact that the author has suffered the same type of heartache. The compassion her writing shows will quickly warm your heart. If you are getting over a failed marriage, or a breakup of a relationship, then this is the must have book that will get you past your pain and suffering.

Books like Getting Past Your Breakup: How to Turn a Devastating Loss Into the Best Thing That Ever Happened To You offers hope to those who are suffering. It will show you how to change a life altering experience into something that will change your life for the better.

5 out of 5 stars No Hope? Read This.   July 25, 2010

I wish I had found this book sooner. Less than one year ago, I was in a very dark place after the demise of my 4+ year relationship with the man I believed was "The One." We had discussed marriage, homes, children, even children's names. Instead of coping with the loss, I rebounded with a man that was not right for me. I hurt this new man, and myself, in the process once I realized my mistake. Had I gotten Susan's book earlier, I would have "gotten past my breakup" in a much healthier fashion by working through the grief instead of avoiding it.

This book is for anyone, but especially those who believe there is no light at the end of the tunnel. There is a light, and it's bright, trust me. It only took me approximately 6 months, even with the rebound setback, to completely move on from my 4+ year relationship. At the time, I didn't believe it would ever be possible. I would sit and cry in my bedroom for hours on end wondering how I could have changed to make things better. This book, although I wish I had read it sooner, helped me to analyze my past relationships and understand why they were flawed. It wasn't that I was flawed, it was the relationship itself. We simply were not compatible. This book helped me realize that "I would rather be alone than accept the unacceptable from anyone."

With the help of this book, I have been able to end a 6 month relationship with another man that I loved who was not right for me. He has called/texted me over and over but this book has given me the strength to know that he cannot convince me to come back. I continue to go back to this book time after time to remember that noone should have to change for another person.

This book can be your light at the end of the tunnel -- read it and bask in your newfound happiness.

If you or someone you know is going through a break up, especially if it is a bad and painful one, you should start reading this book immediately and follow all the advice she gives. You will go through the process with dignity and heal not only the present loss but maybe losses from the past that have accumulated until now.
I wish I started to read this book at the beginning of my break up, I would not have made several mistakes that I later regretted. However, once I started reading, it helped me take control of my situation.
I bought several books to help myself through the painful and excruciating break up process I went through, and I can tell you this is the best one.

This book and the community based website have been a true life saver! Im still early in my healing process but this time I am doing things different. No more back and forth, up and down to a relationship that is over but you just cant seem to let go. Its truly making a huge difference in my healing and overcoming a broken heart. I would absolutely recomend this book to anymore suffering from the hurt of a broken relationship.
