Product Description This book (for Windows and Mac) breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. Instead, it does something that virtually no other Elements book has ever done—it tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why. If you’re looking for one of those “tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Maskfilter” books, this isn’t it. You can grab any other Elements book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade for organizing, correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are—once you know the secrets.
You’ll learn:
- The real secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
- How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you’ll be amazed at how they do it!)
- How to use Camera Raw for processing not only RAW photos, but JPEGs and TIFFs, too! (And you’ll learn why so many pros like it best— because it’s faster and easier)
- The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there’s an entire chapter just on this!)
- How to deal with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
- The most requested photographic special effects, and much more!
The Book's Secret Weapon Although Elements 8 offers some digital photography features that Photoshop CS4 doesn’t offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS4 has that Elements 8 still doesn’t have (things like paths, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you’ll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn’t waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc., and there’s no talk about which camera or printer to buy. It’s all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover, in the only book of its kind!

great elements 8 tutorial July 16, 2010 vickie (georgia) This is the BEST, most well written book on how to use Elements 8. Each task has it's own heading and pictures to illustrate the task - step by step. Highly recommend it.
Love It!! July 14, 2010 Kelly Cooper I love all of Scott Kelby's products this is no different. Very helpful for a novice.
Will be a good reference book July 12, 2010 J. Pastore (Melbourne, FL United States) This is a good book and I will utilize it more once I gain more experience with Elements. It is not a book for beginners just wanting to learn the basics. I am learning much more by watching tutorials on the Web for now. I love Kelby's style of writing, though, and have several of his photography books. This book will be become a good learning resource and reference book in time, I'm sure.
Best PSE book on the mkt. July 7, 2010 Larry L. Wittmer (East Tennessee Mtns.) There just is not a better help manuel on the mkt. its fun, easy to follow and not just a repeat of other volumes.
easy to follow visual instructions, wide variety of topics May 25, 2010 TheOutcrop (NC) even though i have elements 7, i got this book to help me learn some tricks. i've had the program now for about 4 months and have tried teaching myself by using adobe's help website - i've learned a few things, but this book is WAY better - not only at explaining how to do things (he uses screenshots from the program to explain "how to", but also "tricks of the trade" - like how to finish a portrait in five easy steps. i've started doing that to many of my pictures now and i can tell a difference.
i am not a professional photographer (as in, i don't make a living taking pictures) but people do pay me to take pictures for them. i've been in photography for over 10 years and using other photo editing software - just recently i switched to adobe, so that is why i was sort of a novice with elements. this book is a GREAT book for a novice with a elements. but, i think you need to be a good photographer in order to really take advantage of many of the tricks/tips he teaches you. i find myself trying to take certain types of pictures just so i can try out what he is explaining. :)
it is just as good as taking a photo class!
i highly recommend this book! (and, knowing how to use your camera!)
