1 out of 5 stars Shameless Self-promotion   November 18, 2008

Very disappointing. I had hoped for something out of the norm that would make me think in different ways about PR. What I got was page after page of the author's self-promotion. Before buying and reading the book, I had read a number of reviews on Amazon and was convinced enough to buy it. I now agree with a recent reviewer that many of the reviews have to either be from Mr. Shankman's extended family or written by him and filed by his minions. I read this on vacation and will not carry the book home with me. It is not worth the weight.

1 out of 5 stars Can You Buy This Book ?!- Yes, But I Wouldn't (Again)   August 23, 2008

Reading the other reviews I have to think that Amazon sent me a different book!

Absolutely minimal advice, even less takeaways, bordering on banal and tedious.

The writing style is disjointed, ideas are bare or nonsensical and anecdotes are often just plain stupid (3 pages story about a guy who ate too much wasabi???!!).

Incomprehensible to me that it could get decent reviews.

This year, Peter Shankman has shown why he is a creative force to be reckoned with. Perhaps his biggest endeavor has been extending his reach with Help A Reporter Out, a service that matches journalists with sources and has ProfNet quaking in its stale boots.

In "Can We Do That?", Shankman, at minimum, is entertaining.

And when he's on his creative game--and that's more than occasionally--he shares some wonderfully practical tips on how to promote just about anything and everything.

So you really can't lose with this book, and how much you win depends on your hunger and humility---do you really want to glean some insights from Shankman and if you do, can you set aside your ego enough to think that someone as wacky and unorthodox as Shankman can be the one that's teaching you?

As a longtime journalist-turned-publicist, I am hungry for ideas from those who have been in the PR trenches and have no time for high-falutin' jibberish. Shankman shoots straight, admits when he screws up, emphasizes the importance of learning from those screw ups, and moves on.

One example in the book of making things happen is how Shankman took a seemingly non-newsy event (his 30th birthday) and transformed it into a night that left an indelible memory for so many---with PR lessons all along the way.

And his story on how he helped launch a client's PR profile exponentially during the 2004 Republican National Convention was an education. It also was an inspiration, prompting me to implement what has turned out to be a successful publicity stunt for a client, XS Energy Drink, at the Green Party National Convention in July 2008.

Outrageous PR Stunts That Work--And Why Your Company Needs Them is a book that everyone needs to read if you ever want to have your business or brand mentioned in the media. Peter Shankman tells you through examples about how he does it for his clients, and how you can do it.

If you want to get publicity for your business you need to read this book and get inspired. It's a fast read and not technical, and fun too. I highly recommend you spend a few bucks on this book and save yourself thousands of dollars in wasted press releases and events.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1BX6BI1LOESET Can We Do That?! Outrageous PR Stunts That Work--And Why Your Company Needs Them is a fast and interesting read for anybody playing around with PR.

I am a novice in trying to gain PR for my company and found the case studies to be helpful, and it was good to confirm some ideas I had.

The author writes in a personal tone that seems like he's hanging out and telling the stories.
