Product Description
You have a cool Web site, and a really great product, service, or cause you want people to know about. But visitors aren’t beating down your cyber-door. What happened? The answer, most likely, is that you haven’t made your site irresistible to search engines.

Search engines have a great deal of control over the volume of traffic a Web site gets, because they put your site in front of people searching for your product or service. If you know the secrets of wooing the search engines, you can

  • Gain greater visibility for your site
  • Advance your position in the rankings
  • Avoid techniques that cause search engines to bump your site to the end of the list
  • Make pay-per-click advertising pay off

In addition to the familiar ones like Google and Yahoo!, there are dozens of other search engines out there. Search Engine Optimization For Dummies, 2nd Edition shows you how to create a site that will pop to the top like a cork whenever people search for related products or services. It will help you

  • Become familiar with search engines and search directories and find out which keywords work
  • Build your site with techniques that search engines like and avoid the ones they don’t
  • Register your site with the top search systems and get it listed in directories
  • Find out why links are important and see how to get other sites to link to yours
  • Work with Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search, and explore the best and most economical ways to use pay-per-click advertising
  • Discover the common mistakes that make Web sites invisible to search engines

There’s even a companion Web site with all the links in the book neatly (and conveniently) arranged so you don’t have to type them, plus a bonus chapter to help you power up your skills. Search Engine Optimization For Dummies, 2nd Edition has been updated with the latest information on search engines plus plenty of tips and tricks to help your site get the attention it deserves!

4 out of 5 stars Every website owner must buy this book!   November 5, 2008

I bought this book to learn what I couldnt afford my web guy to do for me. My website was not generating much traffic and I thought it was a lack of good key words.

Here's what I learned in the first 3 chapters: By looking at the source code on my site as instructed by the book to do for basic elements I found:
My web pages beyond the home page had no title, description or key words! And more disturbing, my web guys business info was listed in the top area of every page where my page description and key words are supposed to go! I also learned I was not listed in an important directory, which I was able to do myself in 10 minutes.

I am hopping mad at my web guy and looking for a new one! BUY THE BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Review by Holly Crosgrey of Peter Ken'ts SEO for Dummies   October 25, 2008

I am new at search engine optimization and needed a reference to help me get it right the first time. I bought Peter Kent's book because he has alot of knowledge on Wordtracker and I wanted to understand that completely. I am very pleased with this book and the many tips and tricks he passes on. The book contained much much more information than I had anticipated it would. Peter gets down to the basics and really explains how things work online. I will be using Peter's book as a resource for some time to come since it is packed full of information that will take me some time to digest and make use of. I had the opportunity to write Peter Kent. The impression I get of Peter Kent from his book and other resources I have seen is that he is an honest man who wants to let the newbie learn how to do search engine optimization the right way. The book is on its third version and I would suggest to anyone that they buy the latest version of the book rather than an other version since the internet world changes quickly. This would be a recommendation for any book on any type of internet marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Understandable, basic, doable for the novice   October 24, 2008

The suggestions given in this book are doable for the SEO novice. Practical applications, plenty of warnings of what NOT to do, and written in a direct, plain and simple style, this book was worth the purchase price.

I had to re-read and "chew" on the technical terms and others not familiar with internet-speak might get lost in all the "foreign" terms.

I would recommend this book for someone who wants to make simple changes to their website to increase SEO.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book on this topic   October 16, 2008

Hits spot-on in the Dummies category, given that this topic is lots of common sense and not really much technical complexity at all. Read it cover to cover. What more can I add to that.
