Product Description The VMware ESX server is vital to virtualization methods used to perform server consolidation, software development, test automation, legacy Windows migration, and more. Server virtualization can drastically cut business costs, and considering that there are few experts in the field, VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center is an extremely valuable and distinctive resource. The authors present surprising new ways of using virtualization to accomplish tasks now performed at the physical level. All areas of business are examined, with text that features technical information and best practices, including business challenges and technology breakdowns to expedite effective allocation of time and resources.

Basic but well written November 2, 2008 Chris Murdoch (Sunnyvale, CA United States) I think that this is the first textbook that I've ever read cover to cover. The book is very un-daunting at 216 pages of information (before the Appendices) which certainly helped. The explanations of different aspects of ESX Server are well written, and are described well enough to impart their basic functionality. There are a couple of detailed parts with regards to automated builds and VMware consolidated backup which are useful even for an experienced administrator. However, this book is really not aimed at any advanced VMware administrator or implementer, and is definitely not the best technical reference book out there, and is less than half the size of most of them. I believe that this book is useful for somebody needing a primer of all VMware ESX Server technologies, or somebody like me who wants to go back to basics and is trying to reinforce pre-existing knowledge. I found the discussions of some of the experimental and future features interesting, and it is very clear to me that the authors know exactly what they are talking about. I'm not in any way convinced that this is the defacto book as another customer had stated, but it's clearly a useful and well-written if somewhat basic book on the subject.
Long Awaited VMWARE Bible September 16, 2008 Ryan Mccain (Hell, MI) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the defacto standard book on how to use VMWARE. I have been waiting for a book like this for a long, long time. It's novice enough for noobs, but technical enough for the most seasoned VMWARE pro's. Highly recommended for anyone in a VMWARE shop.
