Product Description Many facilitators realize that the basic methodologies they use often fail to take their clients to a place of deeper learning and growth required when addressing complex issues. This book offers over seventy exercises, along with tips and tools for expanding the professional coach's repertoire and includes a full range of interventions. The book also includes step-by-step guidance on how to use these innovative methods with clients. Based on the Skilled Facilitator model developed by best-selling author Roger Schwarz in his landmark book, The Facilitative Coaching Toolkit is ideal for coaches who are looking for advanced alternative approaches to helping their clients get "unstuck" when dealing with obstacles.

An Organization and Inspiration Smorgasbord January 8, 2009 Caroline Penny Hood (Maine, USA) As an Art Therapist and Expressive Arts teacher I have always longed for a text that combines theory and inspiration in an accessible format. Facilitative Coaching strikes just the right balance. Schwarz and Davidson have put their considerable experience into an easy to read, easy to use, format that acts as a springboard to the readers own creativity. Providing just enough theory to shift the readers thinking away from hierarchical modalities toward collaborative and mutual learning, they patiently and consistently encourage the use of language that is effective and empowering. This shift is vital to the effectiveness of the tools offered, and will be a breath of fresh air for those mired in the role of "expert". The simplicity of the tools offered should not be underestimated. Simplicity comes from refining and discarding that which is extraneous. These tools will feel familiar, "with a twist", inspiring confidence and creativity. This text is extremely well organized, and in a sense, models the very style of coaching it teaches. Add to that a splash of humor, and compassion, and I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the creative process, both personally and professionally.
Excellent resource December 22, 2008 Mary L. Moser (Del Mar, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've just spent a week reading Facilitative Coaching, and I am amazed at the breadth and depth of the content. I think this book will be an excellent resource for therapists, teachers and coaching professionals interested in providing clients (individuals or groups)with effective and innovative techniques for moving forward. There is a whole world beyond conventional talk-centered communication, and the authors illuminate this beautifully. All the art exercises are presented so clearly that even those totally unfamiliar with expressive art can easily follow the guidelines. (The CD that comes with the book adds multiple dimensions of understanding regarding the art aspects.) Also, I love "10 Tips for Interventions", examples being "Use Whatever is Available" and "Remain Curious and Playful". And the well-described Creative/Survival Model holds a promise for those who are stuck making choices out of fear. All in all, this is an incredibly rich and well-organized book, and the authors' passion for their work shines out on every page. Mary Lee Moser, "Create Today Journal Workshops and Books"
Best coaching toolkit in years November 27, 2008 Robert Witherspoon (Washington, DC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Everyone wants to be a coach: consultants, trainers, leaders, even therapists. Yet what has been missing until now is a common, practical reference for understanding serious professional coaching at work and in life. Drawing on the landmark research of Chris Argyris, Donald Schoen and other leading thinkers, this important new book by Dale Schwarz and Anne Davidson may be the best new coaching toolkit in years. Chock full of coachware (tips, tools and practical exercises), it combines clear explanations with rich, excellent examples. I am an executive coach, mainly to thoughtful leaders and managers in organizations, and have been coaching full time since 1990. I help clients achieve better results and relationships in business, nonprofits and professional firms. So in reading these authors I felt fully engaged to reflect on my own feedback and coaching in these settings, and some of the special challenges facing leaders at all levels--such as learning from stretch assignments, building talent pools, and managing major career and leadership transitions. For readers specifically interested in executive coaching in organizations, see some of my work--such as Robert Witherspoon and Randall White, Four Essential Ways That Coaching Can Help Executives (Center for Creative Leadership: 1997--and the growing literature on executive coaching, some of which I've covered in other reviews. For a great read, I recommend Facilitative Coaching for new and seasoned coaches alike. Looking ahead, I hope this new book and other contributions to the field can continue to foster a dialogue about the roles coaches play. I see a future where coaching is widely available at work and elsewhere, and where coaching practice is informed by insights from an evolving practice theory for coaching and a growing toolkit to support serious professionals and their clients alike.
