Amazon.com Review It's about time! Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units. Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots. Whatever your organizing issues are, you're not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.

And Inside-out it is November 24, 2008 Veronika (Virginia, USA) This is a very helpful book, as it shows us how to develop your own organizational techniques, not to apply somebody else's. I borrowed it from the library, and then decided that I needed a copy on hand.
worth the read October 8, 2008 Corazon (North Carolina) I've been trying to get organized for a while and this book has helped me more than others. It really focuses on the planning before diving in to attack. That was the part I have been skipping. Now I know what I've been doing wrong and how to correct it in the future.
If you're fed up with being disorganized, this book is one you can't afford to miss. October 4, 2008 T. L. Cooper, author of All She Ever Wanted (Boise, Idaho United States) Organizing From the Inside Out not only teaches the reader how to get organized but helps the reader identify the reasons for his/her lack of organization. Morgenstern also demonstrates how organizing can help increase productivity, reduce stress, and help one feel better about one's self. Organizing From the Inside Out says the key to staying organized is to recognize the behavior patterns that lead to disorganization and the psychological reasons for staying unorganized. Recognizing these patterns and the psychology behind them is worth the read even if it makes the reader squirm a bit. Organizing From the Inside Out is a valuable resource for anyone wishing to get or stay organized.
Good insight! September 24, 2008 Sandie Castle (West Metro Atlanta) I bought this hoping to help find out why my organizing fizzles. So far it has provided the much needed insight into why, now I just need to get to the how to overcome & move forward. This is helping me find out why I am always frustrated with trying to organize and turning around to an even bigger mess! I still have to finish the book and I think it may help me figure out how to move beyond the initial steps of organizing.
Hit the Spot August 25, 2008 Frances A. Riddle (Greenfield Indiana) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book addressed issues that I have alway had with organizing. I thought organized meant neat clean and out of sight and putting things in a "logical" spot according to world standards. I was pleased to find that organized is being able to find what you want or need when you want or need it. And that it's not done in a day.
