A classic edtion to your metaphysical library November 30, 2008 Minneserenity (Earth) Deepak's books have always had a sort of once-removed cerebral feel to them that never completely resonated with me. However, I think that Chopra's book was a necessary stepping stone for me. You have to be aware of spiritual truths before you can live them or become them. Unfortunately his words felt too abstract and always just beyond my realization. This was frustrating, for I wanted to BE the teachings, not just hear about them or discuss them, no matter how inspiring they were. And so, it wasn't until I discovered Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth" that I really "got it." Tolle only has one "Law" for spiritual success, so to speak, but that one Law empowers all the remaining six that Chopra speaks of. Some call it mindfulness, others being in the now, or present-moment awareness. And for me that's what worked. Only then subsequently going back over Chopra's "Seven Laws of Spiritual Success" did I get beyond the barrier between me and Chopra's words. And yes, that subsequent careful rereading of Chopra's book clearly affirms that mindfulness is paramount before anything else. In retrospect here's what I came to discover: What Chopra describes are the BEHAVIORS of a spiritual person who is ALREADY mindful or in present-moment awareness. However, if you're not when reading his books, or practicing the principles thereof, then the truths therein are all just words until you understand what that mindfulness means and actually DO IT. Till then no amount of reading or reading such books, or meditating for that matter, will make any difference. You can be a great at meditation yet still be relatively mindless during the remainder of the day. You can always tell such individuals by how they behave in the dating scene, work, family reunions and traffic. And so: My one criticism of Chopra's book is as follows: He talks about the need to be mindful beyond meditation periods, but Chopra never actually explains the ways to reliably attain, maintain and recognize such mindfulness in yourself (as well as the strategies our minds use to fight it). Tolle masterfully fills in the missing information and provides the tools you need to both realize and become the Now. Finally, for any offended Deepak fans, before you click "not helpful," consider that Deepak wrote HIGH PRAISE of Eckhart Tolle's book "The Power of Now," where on its front cover Deepak wrote as follows: "One of the best books to come along in years. Every sentence rings with truth and power."
must read! November 29, 2008 Janet M. Coldebella (Miami, FL USA) A must read. A short concise, yet profound inspirational reading. I found in it a summary of my believes and a practical guide to success. I have already bought more than a dozen copies that I have given to family, friends and those in need of hope. Specially good for those not so fond of reading, because they can do it very quickly while learning a great deal. Thanks Deepak!
Nothing amazing, but a good book November 26, 2008 Xanax Anyone? Typical for him, good book, but nothing to knock your socks off. Try this one too, Tao Cycle Therapy: Natural Happiness via Self Directed Cure for Chronic Anxiety & Depression [Updated 2008 3nd Edition]
Quick Read November 24, 2008 Donny (Cork Ireland) I read the book in an hour. It is a good pocket book. I find by just reading the summary of each chapter is enough on a daily basis.
pocket classic November 11, 2008 Kevin D. Schoeninger Great compact summary of Deepak Chopra's work. A little book that you can read again and again for inspiration. Good bedtime reading.
