The book reads like a first draft (full of typo's) June 4, 2008 Swing & a Miss (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The overall concept of the book is ok.... The irony is the fact that it's full of bad grammer and bad editing. I found it hard to take seriously....."Power Phrases" Coming from the Director of "The Center for Responsible Communication" consulting firm I would have expected more?
A Valuable Resource! March 28, 2008 Lucretia Katz (Farmington, MO) I've used "Perfect Phrases..." on numerous occasions in the course of carrying out my "real" job as assistant director of a non-profit agency that serves the disabled in three counties. I am so grateful to have the book as a resource when facing difficult situations. Serving on another agency's board, a no-kill animal shelter, is what I do for fun, although it rarely has been. The board includes five members, all female, then we employ a female director and mostly female staff. I've learned that women communicate on such an emotional level that, frequently, emotions interfere with clear, succinct communication, which is why this author's various books are such valuable reference manuals (I also have Power Phrases and How to Use Power Phrases). This book recently served the purpose of assisting in dealing with a difficult situation at the shelter. Nobody expected the issue to end well. However, I consulted the Perfect Phrases for Termination section of your book "Perfect Phrases for Managers and Supervisors" and followed the excellent advice, nearly to the letter. And, you guessed it, the meeting went better than everyone expected. The "bad" news was well received...there was no argument or unnecessary discussion...and the meeting was over in mere minutes. Now, our agency is headed in a new, more positive direction. The toxic environment of the work place is greatly improved. And, the public served by the agency has already noticed the numerous changes taking place. I'd like to thank the author for all her good work. She's made my life easier and has assisted our agency in becoming a more respected force in our community. If you serve in any type of supervisory or management capacity, you need this book!
Perfect for someone who just took on a management position! February 10, 2008 S. Halverson (Atlanta, GA) I wish I would have had this when I took on my new management position almost a year ago! Very handy!
Great for International Managers and Executives December 29, 2007 Genet Jeanjean (Cambridge, MA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Perfect Phrases is terrific for international managers and executives who speak English as a second language. The organization of the book helps you find things quickly just before a meeting or presentation, and gives you practical vocabulary to make your point clearly and concisely. The author gives quick tips on every topic to improve communication skills and enhance professional image with the right language. I am making this book required reading in our communication courses around the globe from now on.
