All across America, angry fathers are demanding rights. These men claim that since the breakdown of their own families, they have been deprived of access to their children. Joining together to form fathers' rights groups, the mostly white, middle-class men meet in small venues to speak their minds about the state of the American family and, more specifically, to talk about the problems they personally face, for which they blame current child support and child custody policies. Dissatisfied with these systems, fathers' rights groups advocate on behalf of legal reforms that will lower their child support payments and help them obtain automatic joint custody of their children. In Defiant Dads, Jocelyn Elise Crowley offers a superbly balanced examination of these groups in order to understand why they object to the current child support and child custody systems; what their political agenda, if enacted, would mean for their members' children or children's mothers; and how well they deal with their members' interpersonal issues concerning their ex-partners and their role as parents.  Don't Bother Buying This Book November 26, 2008

This book is a total sham. If I wanted to take in this much feminist garbage I'd call my husband's ex-wife; who has gone so low in the past as to DENY us visitation and threatened to calls the cops if we didn't give her money in ADDITION to the court ordered amount (which she always received on time). Yes you read that right!! If using your child for extortion isn't offensive to some of you then I don't know what is.
This book does NOTHING to make anyone aware of what fathers and their new families go through in REAL divorces. It figures she married the socialist Allan Colmes, need I say more?

Dr. Jocelyn Elise Crowley has written a defining work on the subject of father's rights in this country. The academic precision with which she approaches this subject is dazzling. The depth of the research, coupled with its balanced presentation, resulted in an informative and thought-provoking book.
A staggering number of children are living with one parent. It is the desire to have both parents of one-parent households act in the best interest of these children that stands out as the goal that Dr. Crowley would like to see achieved.
As one would expect, fathers are shown in both positive and negative lights. Some fathers are not emotionally or financially able to positively impact their children's lives. Others, with the best intentions, are thwarted by vindictive mothers. However, the overriding message is that the father's rights groups can and do accomplish much of what they set out to do, and are in a unique position to accomplish a lot more.
Kudos to Dr. Crowley.

Dr. Crowley has written a well research and nuanced book about the Father's Rights Movement. I found her extensive research provides a well rounded view of the issues involved with the subject. Anyone interested in this policy area will benefit from reading her book.

Jocelyn Elise Crowley has correctly written an important book about the Fathers' Rights Movement in America as a key political initiative where the court system routinely strips fathers of their dignity. Her book shows the reality of activists struggling to change a biased court system while most dads suffer in silence. Jocelyn has shown the strength to speak out about gender injustices' hurting children across America. Jocelyn's book is an important and powerful sequel to Fathers' Rights by the veteran Fathers' Rights attorney and activist Jeffery M. Leving.

Dr. Crowley has written a balanced book about the Father's Rights movement and the incredibly complex social & political issues associated with this subject. It appears that other reviewers have their opinion already formed regarding the subject matter prior to reading the book. This is unfortunate, as Dr. Crowely has done an excellent job of fairly presenting both the political and social sides of this subject. I highly recommend this book.
