Product Description This is a brand-new and supremely comprehensive photo history of 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte from its formation as a small unit in 1933, until 1942. It is packed with rare and previously unpublished photographs and maps, as well as facsimiles of documents, and organizational diagrams. The photographs are substantially different to those which appeared in the Heimdal LAH photo album published over 10 years ago. A superb set of photographs and extremely well produced.

Die Leibstandarte...a Photographic Triumph! April 9, 2008 Kevin J. Callinan Jr. (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I would like to echo C.D. Turner's praise for Trang's Die Liebstandarte..It is most excellent..and merely because it is a photographic compendium! The previous criticisms of this work's French language text lose sight of the fact that this book was meant primarily as a PHOTOGRAPHIC chronical and NOT as a comprehensive written history. As a long time student and amateur historian of the Waffen SS; I can state there are numerous excellent and thorough written studies covering the LSSAH in detail, and one seeking such a history should NOT purchase this work. Trang's purpose was to encapsulate the unit's trials in training pre-war up to the early years of its scope in combat through a comprehensive review of photographs taken by correspondants attached to the division. Trang first published this work from Heimdal over 10 years ago, and it appears this revised book is how he envisioned the finished form from the start. It was clearly a labor of love; and anybody who has combed through the miasma of poorly cataloged photo contact sheets in US and other similar archives abroad can attest to what patience and diligence is needed to accurately lay out such photographs to ensure their proper description and year of attribution. Irrespective of what a reader's moral point of view is concerning the Waffen SS; the LSSAH secured for itself a reputation as a premier fighting unit which was led by many courageous officers. Trang has produced a remarkable photographic work here, and I anxiously await his work on the 3rd SS Division "Totenkopf" which is due to be released in the USA in June 2008.
Great book April 7, 2008 C. D. Turner (Brussels) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
First of all, the book is only in French, which is not a problem for me, as it forces me to improve my French skills and author unlike many books in english knows his subject well. Secound, as merely a photo history for those who cannot read French, the book should score highly as there are plenty of photographs that are well chosen and well produced. Thirdly this is the first of a series of 3 books, so the coverage of the unit will be extensive.
French Language text should be advertised as such. April 1, 2008 History Buff (Olympia, WA United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Good to see that Amazon has finally corrected its' error by stating that this book is written in French. Too bad is was advertised with an English text when I purchased it. Certainly cannot recommend a book which I cannot read.
Thought I was an idiot, appears at least in this case I'm not! April 1, 2008 David M. Walton (Omaha, NE USA) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I,as the other reviewers, was under the impression that this book was published in English. The pictures are great but I do not speak French and that is what this book is published in. I recall that Amazon said this book was in English when I ordered it. Very dissapointed!
Disappointed the book was in French March 29, 2008 Nollig (Seattle, WA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a victim of Amazon's original description of this book being written in English, I experienced disappointment. Since I am fluent in only two languages (German and English), its worth was only for its pictures, not enough to justify the price for me. However, on examination it appears to be a fine, high quality, and well put together treatise. My intuition is that if it were translated well into English it would be of five star caliber. My hope is that it gets translated soon into English, as well as with Trang's other book Totenkopf, which for over one year has been on several occasions claimed shortly to be available by Amazon in English, and then suddenly it becomes unavailable. If you are a fluent reader of French, and interested in the LAH, or the Waffen-SS I suggest this book, thus three stars, based on gut feeling.
