Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint have a powerful message for families and communities as they lay out their visions for strengthening America, or for that matter the world. They address the crises of people who are stuck because of feelings of low self-esteem, abandonment, anger, fearfulness, sadness, and feelings of being used, undefended and unprotected. These feelings often impede their ability to move forward. The authors aim to help empower people make the daunting transition from victims to victors. Come On, People! is always engaging, and loaded with heart-piercing stories of the problems facing many communities.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to read this!   January 6, 2009
T. Platt (www.imagine-that.weebly.com)
Come on people for real! This book is great. I opened this book and immediately was thrown into the reality of the life of the Black man and woman. Bill Cosby and Dr. Poussaint have recorded the true lives and struggles of the black man and his pitfalls. This book is a wake-up call. When reading it I could actually hear myself saying: "Come on people". If you desire to change and perfect this life that we live,as a black man, black woman and for all other races, we must read this book to begin to understand each other and the traps that we set for each other. Women need to pick this book up. Men need to use this book as a tool. Highly recommended! Come on people.

5 out of 5 stars Black and White Parents Both Need to Wake Up   December 30, 2008
B. Wolinsky (New York)
Wake up, parents! It's 10pm and do you know where your children are? Do you know which school they attend? Do you know the names of their teachers? Have you peeked into their room lately? Have you taught your children about sex?

As a teacher in the NYC public school system, I found that most parents didn't know their kids' teachers' names. They had no idea what (or if) their children were learning. They'd spend thousands on expensive sneakers, flat-screen TV's, and cable TV, then complain when they had to pay for their daughter's school uniform.

In this age of luxury, we substitute "spending" for "responsibility." Mom and Dad feel that as long as they "bring home the beacon", everything else is "not my job". Out of the 45 students I had, only five came to see me on parents' night. Only two parents said they'd read to their children when they were little. In three years, I met with only one father. One parent didn't feel like coming so she sent the Deacon from her church!

The problems that Cosby and Poussaint talk about are wrecking Black and White people equally. Look at Columbine; why didn't the parents of Harris and Klebold know what was going on? Those boys were teenagers; how come the parents didn't know they had guns? How did this happen under their noses? It's almost 10 years since that tragedy and school shootings are a disease. The question is always the same; why didn't the parents know their son had a pistol, and why did they never talk to their kid about school, life, sex, and survival?

Now look at Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. Her daughter is 17; why didn't she assume her daughter was sexually active? Why didn't she teach her daughter about the PENIS and the VAGINA and SEXUAL INTERCOURSE and CONDOMS and that wonderful birth control method called MASTURBATION? I guess Palin thinks it's immoral to assume teens are having sex.

Parents all over America need to wake up and get off the couch. Sports are not a way out of poverty. The TV teaches kids nothing. You're not obliged to buy your kid "cool" clothes. You need to read to your three-year-old every night before bed. You need to stop feeding nachos to babies. You need to stop cursing in front of your children. You need to walk to your kids' school, get a printout of their schedule, and talk to the teachers. You need to provide a quiet space for them to do their homework.

The streets are very appealing to a kid from a broken home. The only thing that stands between them is the parent.

Barack Obama's YES WE CAN mantra only works if both parties say YES I WILL.

Easy read. Facts are very interesting. Too bad the people who actually read this book, are not necessarily the people who should read this book.
