Product Description Archaeology won't prove or disprove the Bible's truth claims. But archaeology, combined with other bodies of evidence like historical geography, extrabiblical texts, anthropological insights, and careful study of the writings of ancient Israel, allow us to reconstruct a reasonable picture of the ancient Israelites: how they lived, what they thought, and what their Scriptures mean. In Studying the Ancient Israelites, a seasoned professor uses accessible writing and an inviting page design to introduce students and serious readers to the foundations of our understanding of the people of the Old Testament.

very good September 17, 2008 Sam Booksmith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every Victor H. Matthews book is worth reading. What sets him apart is the fact that he is a real teacher, not just a scholar. This is one author who uses every interpretive tool in reading the Bible - culture, language, literature, archaeology, and canon - but he always takes the nonexpert along for the ride. Here he deals with resources and scientific methods for researching ancient Israel. Much of the content is for total beginners, but there is much here to inform and fascinate experienced Bible students, especially the sections on archaeology and historiography. He has a new book coming out in October, 2008 called "More Than Meets The Ear" in which he will explain all the cultural nuances and hidden meanings of Old Testament conversations.
